Madonna has made a career of almost 30 years in their ability to shock and surprise, especially during awards programs and live television. And despite his brilliant, high-energy halftime extravaganza at Super Bowl Sunday was praised by the likes of Ashton Kutcher, Christina Aguilera and Perez Hilton, who was a slip of the finger, and tongue, by a customer that made headlines.
During a performance of Madonna's new single, "Give Me All Your Luvin '" the singer MIA led his guest rap with a defiant middle finger pull and a letter of non-secure time-of-first-s pump.
NBC censors were not fast enough to hide the gesture, or completely erase the bad word, and following the game on the network apologized for the incident. "We apologize for the inappropriate gesture which aired during halftime," said a spokesman. "It was a spontaneous gesture that caught our delay system later."
The NFL - which hires the performers and produced the halftime show - pointed his finger directly on NBC. "There was a glitch delay on NBC," the league said in a statement. "The obscene gesture performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing, and we apologize to our fans."
According to Deadline Hollywood, M.I.A. things are kept clean during rehearsals, but clearly was excited during the performance.
M.I.A. is no stranger to controversy. After the magazine New York Times wrote a long feature about the singer (born Mathangi Arulpragasam) in 2010, she attacked the writer on some of the unflattering descriptions through music. In addition to publishing the phone number of the writer on Twitter, MIA blasted the journalist Lynn Hirschberg in public, threatened to release the tapes unedited interview and, finally, gave a hint of disease, "I am a singer," in retaliation.
She was also denied a travel visa in 2005 by the U.S. government and appeared on a list of risk to U.S. national security in 2006 as a result of his lyrics controversial policies.
